Mega-Late, Mega-Decorated Post!

Dearest Captain Spazzmataz!

I have done it!  I have for you not one, not two, not three, but six pages of general wreckage and good times.  True I did this to myself, and true it seemed like a daunting task, but I have completed it.  Behold.

The first page we had to complete was very reminiscent of a page in our previous wreckage books.  Last time, I felt like I had done a terribly messy job, so this time I took it upon myself to make the neatest page possible.

IMG_0400

This probed to be very difficult, as both kittens instantly came out of the woodwork to attack the yarn.  This resulted in a very tragic tearing of the paper, but I still feel like it looks fairly nice.

Secondly, I had to decorate a sticker.  I chose the absolutely riveting Lisa Frank heart dolphins, pictured in their non-decorated splendor below.

IMG_0401

I initially planned on making an intensely colorful, heart themed, abstract picture around them, which is why there is that weird dark spot in the middle of the page.  After committing to the weird dark spot, I decided an ocean background would be much more fun, so just pretend that didn’t happen.

IMG_0402

I actually had a nice time doing this little freehand doodle.  Though, I basically enjoy any chance to utilize my shmansy color pencils.

Excuse the maps to follow.  They’re rather dreadful.  Directions and spatial reasoning just aren’t my friend.  I obviously have no future as a cartographer.

IMG_0403

Since there were two pages, I made two maps.  One that leads to something that I, or most people, would want, and one that leads to something the puppy dogs would want.  As you can see, the paths are pretty straight forward.  Also, I fail at drawing things on any sort of consistent scale.

This brings me to the page that started all of my problems.  The food page.

IMG_0405

I actually ended up getting this to work better than I thought.  I had been distressed because I forgot to save random items from both Papa Johns and Steak n’ Shake.  However, as I was foraging for yarn in my desk, I found coupon sheets for both establishments.  Happily, these provided representation for them on my page.  The Panera logo is extra big because I ate there twice in the last week and a half.  No shame!

For the page of life advice I’d want to read in 10 years, I had no idea what to put.  I scrolled a bit on the Internet, looking for quotes from authors I liked or something similar that would suffice.  I found nothing, which is so typical of the Internet.  Fortunately, I did find a picture I had saved of definitions for emotions all people have but don’t know how to describe.  I’m skeptical as to the overall legitimacy of some of these definitions, but I’ve always liked the list and saved it in my phone.  I thought it would be fun to save them here for my thirty-four-year-old future self to re-discover.

IMG_0406

Finally, I bring you the wax page.  I did not like the wax page.  I should no longer be allowed to complete wax pages.  In the case of this wax page, I used way too much wax, burnt my palm, and got wax on my dishwasher.  Artemis found it fascinating.  The wax also slightly bled onto the next page, so I’ll have to figure that nonsense out next week.

IMG_0407

There you have it!  I have completed my mission.  I feel so accomplished.  I’ll leave you with the note that I’m looking forward to your instagram post today (look us up on pawsandpages), and this picture of what Annabelle was doing whilst I slaved at my wreckage.

Two Weeks Worth

Dearest Super Koala,

I am sorry that I have not posted in two weeks. I just completely forgot about it last week. However, I hope you realize that on Monday, you will have six pages due in order to catch up to me.

The first page was pretty easy. I was instructed to make a treasure map. I was at first just going to make a really cool looking map that served no real purpose, but then I decided to actually “bury” something. Bury is in quotations because I didn’t really dig up the ground and put something in it, rather I hid objects in our basement. Now that I think about it though, that is just as good as burying something.

IMG_0049

So the map is a layout of the basement and in three of the rooms I hid a different object. In the laundry room there is a container full of bouncy balls, in the bedroom there is a ball of yarn, and in the back room there is a painted box with rocks inside. All three objects are completely out of plain sight, so I consider that buried.

For the next page, I had to collect something from every place I went out to eat that week. We only went three places, and I wasn’t very good at remembering to take something, so I guess it was a good thing I didn’t post last week. Otherwise, this page would have been very boring.

IMG_0051

On Sunday, we went to Jo Boccardi’s; I had pizza. My object is the paper they use to keep the silverware wrapped up. However, I forgot to take this with me. Luckily, Frailey’s, where we went on Tuesday, has the same color wrapper, so I just took two from there. Finally, on Thursday, I had White Castle’s. I was going to cut out the logo on the bag, but I forgot about that and had to settle with a piece of napkin. To supplement for my lackluster items, I drew pictures of what I had in order to jazz the page up a bit.

On the next page I was supposed to write notes to myself that I would want to read in ten years. I couldn’t really think of anything to write, so instead I just wrote a bunch of cheesy motivational phrases in fun fonts to fill up the space. I think it wound up looking pretty cool.

IMG_0050

Finally, I had to drip wax onto a page. I got very impatient waiting for enough wax to melt, so I wound up with very little to work with. It was my plan to make a smiley face all along to go with my motivational sayings, I just had less wax to work with than I would have liked. But, I guess that is my own fault for getting antsy. Nonetheless, I think he is pretty cute.

IMG_0052

That’s all I have for these past weeks. I hope I will be more punctual this coming week.

Satisfactory Pages

Dearest Super Koala,

Week 2! I am successfully posting on time for the second week in a row! I know that isn’t much of a streak, but it will be soon. Of course you know what the pages of our project are this week, so I will just get right into it.

The first page was a little tricksey. I had already done something similar in our previous books, so I wanted to try something different.

IMG_1159

I was really excited to do the shoelace thing, and it was my idea from the beginning, but it took so long for me to figure out how to make it work. I did follow the instructions and make the holes an inch from the sides and each other. However, once I marked it out, I realized it was impossible to get to the inside marks with the hole punch. I was thinking about how to fix this and decided on poking holes with a pencil. The holes aren’t very pretty, but they are round, and I was able to thread my ribbon through them, so I guess that is all that matters.

My next issue was that a page in a book is unlike a shoe in the sense that I cannot just pull the string through and have it be ready to thread again. After threading the first two holes, I quickly realized this was a major flaw in my plan. In order to overcome this challenge, I had to thread the ribbon through and then thread it through the back again so that way it could be on top again. This meant that I did not allot myself enough ribbon and had to cut a longer piece.

I finally finished about a half an hour after starting, but I think the effort was worth it. It looks pretty cool, and I successfully achieved the image I had in my mind which doesn’t happen often. Just a warning for when you go to do this; maybe try to think of something a little simpler because I had quite the struggle.

The next page was fairly simple except for the fact that I had no idea what I was going to use for a sticker. I couldn’t find any stickers anywhere. I thought I still had some puffy animal ones, but I could not locate those. I almost went out to buy some stickers when at the last minute I realized I had my Koneko Cat coloring book with stickers! I was super excited to get to use one. After picking the cat I wanted, I knew exactly what scene I would draw.

IMG_1160

My Koneko Cat is at a Fiesta! Complete with lantern decorations and food stalls. I think it is pretty adorable, and once again I am very happy with how this page turned out.

That’s all I have for this week. I can’t wait to see what you come up with on Monday.

P.S. We should Skype on Sunday to read Joy Luck Club.

Sister Adventures: This is Halloween!

In a delightful continuation of a very sister filled October, Spazzmataz came to Springfield for a visit this weekend!  We had a good amount of exciting activities planned, so we got right to it when she arrived Friday afternoon.

Our first evening together involved the running of some necessary errands.  We got our 5k race packets, some tasty dinner, some Halloween candy, and most necessarily of all, some doughnuts.  Spazz decided we needed a dozen.  I did not disagree.

IMG_1153

We spent the rest of the evening at home, avoiding the rain and watching a movie off our list called Funny Games.  More on that in another post.

We were up early on the day of Halloween for a most exciting run.  The Halloween Hustle was held to benefit Harmony House, which is an incredible Springfield organization that everyone should learn about and support.  It had a super sweet 3D theme (visible on shirts pictured below).  It was also our first run in the rain, but we did okay.  We succeeded in our primary goal of not falling while running over wet leaves.

IMG_9891

I felt like I did horrible during the run.  I just never properly caught my breath.  So I was pleased to discover I did about the same as our last run.  I know I should be working on progressing, but with how poorly I felt I did, I was excited at the lack of regressing.  Spazzmataz and I finished about at the same time, with her finishing .6 seconds earlier.  That time was just speedy enough for her to win a most excellent second place medal!  She got the same place at last year’s Wizard Waddle Halloween run.  Go consistency.

IMG_9893

We spent the rest of the day preparing for our most lovely evening.  This lead to some excellent animal cuteness about the house.  Pause for a kitten interlude.

IMG_9894

Spazzmataz and I dressed up as witches to hand out Halloween candy to the many trick-or-treaters in my neighborhood.  Originally, the idea was that Gremlin/Winry would be our black cat, but she was not pleased by the experience and was properly returned indoors.

IMG_9895IMG_0944

Candy went surprisingly quickly in the neighborhood.  It turns out two Sam’s Club bags are not enough.  We saw some awesome and adorable costumes though.  One family (group of friends?) had made almost a hayride out of the experience.  They sat chairs in the bed of their truck and the attached trailer.  They’d park at a corner and a group of about 20 parents and children would pile out and go to the houses in the area.  It was amazingly coordinated.

Afterwards we had another scary movie to watch for our list.  Spazzmataz set about to making a most scrumptious autumn soup that fit my vegetarian needs while I made us a comfy pillow pallet.  I think we were both very successful in our endeavors.

IMG_9897 IMG_9899

Artemis got a pillow pallet, too.

IMG_9898

After dinner we huddled in our blankets while watching the nonsense that is Scream.  We had the fire on, some tasty doughnuts, and Scrubs to keep us company afterwards.

IMG_9903 IMG_9902

All together, it ended up being a most excellent holiday.  Now, for snow days.

Rip it! Write it! Draw it! (Doing it!)

Dearest Super Koala,

I am finally doing it! I have started our new project. It took us awhile to get started, hopefully now everything can run smoothly. For those of you who don’t know, Super Koala and I have decided to put Keri Smith to the side and start a new project. Here is the first two pages of our new book.

IMG_1151

The first page was to make a welcome page and then write three things you are learning about yourself. I decided to go for a chevron theme for my welcome, but I realized that it would have looked a lot better if I would have allotted more time to complete it. Who knew that making a chevron pattern would be so difficult. Also, instead of markers I am going the colored pencil route on this book, and after doing this page I am super jealous of Super Koala’s fancy colored pencils. I simply have Crayola, which are nice, but they aren’t nearly as smooth as the prismacolor ones.

Anyway, the three things I wrote are:

1. I am super lucky to have a sister that loves me so much.

I know this is kind of cheesy, but yes, my sister is amazing, and I know plenty of people that despise their siblings, so I am very fortunate to have one that is basically the best.

2. I am way more dedicated than I though I was.

I know people going into the music education field practice their instruments for hours on end each day. I never thought I could be that person and therefore started having doubts as to whether I was cut out for it or not. Lately though, I have been practicing for at least an hour a day, and I realize that I want to practice even more after that. I am happy to have realized this within myself.

3. I need to let other people do things too.

I have realized that I am sort of super controlling, especially when it comes to school things. I was doing a group project in Astronomy, and I realized that the other people in my group were just as capable as I am. So, I am going to try to allow others work on important things.

IMG_1149

This second page was pretty fun; it instructed me to create a checkerboard on the page and then play checkers with someone. For my checkerboard, I decided to get a little squiggly. Then, at lunch, I used folded up paper as the pieces and played with one of my friends. She wound up winning.

Welp, I get to see you today which is super exciting! I can’t wait to see what you come up with on Monday.

Ultimate Sister Weekend

Dearest Readers,

This weekend the Super Koala and I had the house to ourselves because our parentals are in Cancun. They are super butt faces because the high temperatures here are about 60, and they are laying out on a beach right now, but at least we had an entire weekend of doing exactly what we wanted with no nagging.

Our super sister weekend started on Friday with Super Koala arriving in town very early because neither of us had school that day. We had decided to take a spontaneous trip to The Melting Pot other than our usual Christmas time visit, but our reservations weren’t until 9, so we went to the movies first.

Normally when we go to the movies we get kiddy combos as our snack of choice. This time they had extra special Peanuts Movie buckets for only 50 cents more. Of course we had to get them, and it was a really great idea because it was double the popcorn for only 50 cents!

IMG_1118

Our movie of choice was Crimson Peak because Tom Hiddleston. He is so wonderful even if I hate scary/suspenseful movies. I did enjoy the movie, especially after the wonderful turn of events that was revealed in the last 30 seconds that made everything better.

When it was finally time for dinner, we gladly stuffed ourselves to the point of no return.

IMG_1120 IMG_1122 IMG_1121

Whenever we go to the Melting Pot, we get the four course meal and it is always so delicious. For the cheese, we got the spinach artichoke dip which came with apples, bread, chips, and assorted vegetables to dip with.

IMG_1125

This was the first time we had tried this cheese, and it was so good. Especially with the bread and chips. The next course was salad. We both got the caeser salad which contains the most delicious parmesan encrusted pine nuts ever, but we forgot to take a picture of this portion. For the main entree, I got the steak lovers platter, which contained three types of steak, and Super Koala got the vegetarian platter. Hers had so many types of vegetables, that she was not able to finish it all.

IMG_1127

Finally came the dessert fondu. They had a special 40th anniversary dessert that consisted of white chocolate fondu with a molten lava cake on top. It. Was. Amazing.

IMG_1139

After almost three hours and not being able to move much anymore, we headed home for bedtime because our Saturday adventures took place at my band competition.

This was a local competition at Seckman High School. Our band was one of the biggest there, which is uncommon, and we took first in our division in prelims, and then took first overall in finals.

IMG_1141 IMG_1143 IMG_1142

During the day it warmed up okay, even enough for Super Koala and I to share a sno-cone,

IMG_1140

but once the sun started to go down, the temperature plumeted and we were very cold for the rest of the night. We came home, but not before a trip to QT for hot chocolate and taquitos, and cuddled in bed while watching Scrubs on Netflix.

Today we made a trip to Barnes and Noble to pick out a new sister project to do. After looking around for about an hour, we decided on, Rip it! Write it! Draw it! It is a book very similar to Keri Smith’s Wreck This Journal, but it is something new with different activities in it.

IMG_1129

We will now get back into regular weekly posting with my posts on Fridays and Super Koala’s on Mondays. Every week we will be completing two pages of the book, and this time we are going to do them in order.

That is all we have for now, thanks for reading!

1001 Movies: The Producers

From the Bed of Super Koala:

I had many thoughts about The Producers, and I’m not really sure how to process it.  The following is my attempt.

First of all, someone needed to talk to the costuming department.  I just cannot handle Max’s hair.  At all.  What is happening?  Why is it so gross?  This fundamentally improved throughout the movie, particularly with the addition of a hat and/or helmet.  Additionally, why did all the men in make up have to be so scary?  Why did they have to wear so much make up?  I know some men that look absolutely gorgeous with a little cosmetic magic, but all of the made up men in this movie just gave me the heebie jeebs.    Finally, in regards to the costume/make up issue, why did the old women have to look so terrible?  Seriously, all this movie taught me was that old women were so scary looking in the 1960s.  Was there no better lighting they could put on them?  Could no one be a little gentler in this regard?

I’m always astounded that Mel Brooks movies are rated PG, as are the students that watch them in my classes.  This movie was no exception.  The entire opening segment was mildly traumatizing, mildly hilarious.  I wish I had a picture of Sparhawk’s face as it was happening.  But I kind of feel this way about all of the humor in Brooks’ films.  I’m perpetually walking the line between absolutely horrified and absolutely amused.  I suppose that is masterful on his part.  That being said, the Kafka reference in this film is perfect, so A+ for that.

My next question about this film is simple: why are people always yelling?  I think there are a lot of funny moments that end of leaving me irritated because I hate unnecessary yelling.  I know that a little hysterical yelling is kind of Gene Wilder’s thing, but did it have to be everyone’s thing?

Finally, I need to know one last crucial detail.  From watching this film, I picked up on the implication that Leo Bloom is actually the grown version of Linus from Peanuts.  Am I right, or am I right?

3 stars overall.

From the Bed of Captain Spazzmataz,

So, all of the other Mel Brooks movies we have watched so far did not go over very well with me, however I enjoyed this one. It was very unsettling at the beginning and I actually paused it to check the rating about three minutes in. Nonetheless, I found this film amusing whereas the others I just found dumb.

I think Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder worked wonderfully together, and even though they were attempting to pull off a large scale scam, I was rooting for them to succeed. I absolutely loved when Leo had his first major fit of hysteria. I laugh to myself every time I think of the line, “I’m in pain and I’m wet and I’m still hysterical!”

I agree with Super Koala that the costuming and make up was atrocious. But I also think that added to the humor of the characters.

4 stars
